“The unknown becomes a friend, absurdity is worn well, fear is gently smiled at. The making-a-fool quality is always present when you stand at the edge of empty space and…. willingly take the first step.” -Barbara Dilley
I was born on the southern tip of the Great Lake Michigan in 1938, and I began my dancing path with Audree Estey, who was the founder of the Princeton Ballet Society. My mentor during those formative years was the talented Helen Priest Rogers, who had previously danced with the renowned Martha Graham while at Mt. Holyoke College back in 1960. Helen encouraged me to attend the American Dance Festival held in New London, Connecticut, where I had the opportunity to meet the legendary Merce Cunningham. This interaction led to my invitation to join his prestigious company in 1963, and I toured extensively across various locations until 1968. During the years 1966 to 1970, I had the privilege to dance alongside Yvonne Rainer, and I also became part of the Grand Union, which was an iconic dance theater improvisation ensemble that thrived from 1970 to 1976. In 1974, I received an invitation to teach during the inaugural summer session of Naropa University, which was then known as the Naropa Institute, in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. At the end of that transformative summer, the founder, Tibetan meditation master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, kindly invited me to design a dedicated dance program that I oversaw from 1975 to 1984. Subsequently, I served as the president of Naropa from 1985 to 1993, and eventually returned to the arts faculty to continue my work. I am a proud parent of two children, Benjamin Lloyd and Owen Bondurant, and I currently reside in of Boulder, Colorado.
